Neon Gods by Katee Robert
Wow ok so this was my second Katee Robert book and I was a little hesitant to pick it up mostly cuz I didn't love the first one I read. But then I listened to my favourite podcast (Books N' Betches) and they along Cori from RomancingtheReader convinced me to pick it up.
Since I listened to the full podcast episode, I already knew the plot so I lost the "surprise" element of it but what was not lost were those small moments of banter and sarcasm between Hades and Persephone that made me have to stop reading and just fan girl. (See gif below)
I fell in love with the characters and especially the very unique world. It was loosely based on Greek mythology but you didn't have to be an expert to know what was happening. Some characteristics of the gods were present in the characters but other than that, the gods are simply political positions in the city.
One thing Katee Robert did phenomenally in this book was the diversity.. She so masterfully weaved it within the story that it didn't feel forced or like it was a check mark she had to cross. It made this story so realistic and much more relatable because I could actually see myself in the characters. Everyone was a different size, shape, and colour and it was so refreshing because it dint feel like I was reading a book about a "Barbie" and "Ken". The characters also had flaws and problems they had to deal with (which mirrored the real world) that were not magically solved at the end of the book.
I just loved every interaction between the characters and as much as
I loved the main couple, I also wanted to learn more about the side characters. (SIDE NOTE: Katee recently said that Hera's and Hermes' book are gona be the last ones released AND I AM ANGRY I WANT THEM. NOW ! ! !)
The plot of this book was also interesting but I feel like the focus was really on the characters and developing the world and I loved that we were eased into it because the second book just picked off and the plot started right away.
I really cant say enough good things about this book; I just loved every element of it and I am so invested in the characters and it's becoming one of my new favourite series and I can't believe I have to wait so long until the next book.
