(PS. I like the other cover better - the solid red one - but the quality of those were pretty bad so I just used this one)
On our instagram, most of you voted to have a post for each book in the ACOTAR series so here we are starting with the first one, A Court of Thorns and Roses. (Our insta is @theliteraturechronicles btw)
Would like to start this off by saying that I loved this series as a whole and it really got me into reading more Sarah J Maas which lead me to Throne of Glass which lead me to loving fantasy :)
Alrighty then, lets get started...
I've noticed that in fantasy series, the first book is always slightly slower to get right in the action because there is a lot more world building and this is the case for ACOTAR too. This made first half of the book pretty boring; fortunately, I love Sarah J Maas' writing style so it wasn't a very painful experience.
I loved how the first plot was introduced because it gave you an idea of the whole story arc but it didn't give anything away. I think I mentioned this in the Throne of Glass review, but Sarah J Maas has such a good grasp on foreshadowing because she masks them in seemingly normal events but they have major implications later on.
This was definitely not the best book in the series but that's kinda to be expected since its main reason for existence is to set the stage and let the second and third book just shine. Also trust Sarah J Maas on the whole character development part because she just makes it go up and down and up and down but I think that brings a realistic element to the book because no one just stays the same all the time.
Another thing I will mention is the fan art. This series, as most Sarah J Maas books, has a gargantuan fan base which leads to a lot of really amazing fan art. I really recommend just Pintrest-ing the characters so you get the vibe because there are some that are just really well done and bring the story to life.
Also, if this book isn't already spoiled for you, try your best to not read any spoiler reviews or look at too many memes because it just takes the magic away from the next books and the surprises and plot twists are SO worth it :)
I don't really know how to conclude this review so I'll just sum everything up:
- plot is slow at the beginning but gets interesting later in the book
- try not to have anything spoiled cuz it makes everything better
- characters are sometimes questionable but it gets better in the next books
- be careful when looking at fan art so you don't spoil anything
